Search Engine PlacementNatural search engine rankings attract targeted, pre-qualified prospects to your site at the lowest possible price per visitor, but only if you rank somewhere on the first or second page. How many times have you chosen the 100th link on a search engine results page?
There are many techniques that will bring visitors to your site. One critical element is the proper selection of keywords or phrases that both describe your site and help people find it. Keywords and phrases, when selected and composed properly, will determine what terms your site will rank for.
By targeting the right keywords on your website, you can increase the quality and quantity of the traffic to your site. Keyword research is vital to drive qualified traffic to your site. We spend substantial time researching keywords to find relevant, targeted and traffic driving keywords. Often times, people make the mistake of optimizing for very general keywords like used cars or online marketing. Although these terms get lots of traffïc, it is very unlikely that you will be able to rank highly for them. Then, even if you do, this type of traffïc produces very low conversion rates because they are not targeted prospects.
For example, if you are selling real estate, it would be much more beneficial for you to target the phrase "MyState Real Estate" rather than the extremely competitive keyword "Real Estate". It would be even better to target the phrase "MyTown MyState Real Estate". This is a specific and defined area of real estate and therefore will attract more buyers than searchers.
The more targeted your keyword phrase, the more likely visitors are to buy. A person who types in "real estate" may be looking for "Colorado Real Estate" or "New Jersey Real Estate". This leads to useless, un-targeted traffïc. However, a person that searches for a specific location for real estate knows exactly what they want and they are much further along in the buying process.
Here are some general tips for selecting the right keywords and phrases:
- Be cautious about choosing a single keyword that 5 million other sites are using. You will get lost. Instead, narrow your choice of a keyword into something more precisely targeted.
- When a choice exists, use the longer form of a keyword. For example, if you choose the keyword "consult" and someone searches on "consulting", you will not be found. But using "consulting" or "consultants" will result in a match for either
"consult", "consultants" or "consulting". For the same reason, use the plural form of any noun by adding an "s" where possible.
- Don't waste your time submiting your site to the search engines, get links to your site.
